Eminem has been dishing up rhymes for over 20 years. Now he’s dishing out pasta.
The hip-hop legend was on hand when Mom’s Spaghetti opened its brick-and-mortar restaurant Wednesday (Sept. 29) at Union Assembly, in downtown Detroit, just across from Comerica Park.
We don’t know if Em rolled up his sleeves and washed dishes or seated guests, but he sure brought some star-power to the party.
The “Lose Yourself” rapper did, however, pose at the drive-through window with a carton of takeout, and in a room adorned with the famous local lad’s album artwork.
A retail store called The Trailer is part of the operation, The Detroit Free Press reports.
If you dig spaghetti — and let’s face it, who doesn’t — the Rap God’s joint has something for you. Its menu includes a round of spaghetti (for $9) spaghetti with balls (for $12) or vegan balls ($14), and spaghetti sandwiches ($11).
The restaurant owes its name to the opening lyric from Eminem’s Oscar-winning motivational masterclass “Lose Yourself,” in which he raps, “His palms are sweaty, knees weak, arms are heavy/ There’s vomit on his sweater already, mom’s spaghetti.”
The art became a reality as far back as 2017, when Mom’s Spaghetti opened as a pop-up, with the artist making headlines when he distributed nosh to frontline workers, and it would reappear at Coachella and Firefly festivals in 2018, with Em headlining both bills.
The new, permanent location, and those earlier pop-ups, is a partnership with restaurant group Union Joints Restaurant Group.
Whether he’s in the kitchen, or on the charts, Eminem is hot stuff. His most recent album release, 2020’s Music to Be Murdered By, debuted at No. 1 on the Billboard 200 for an historic 10th leader, all consecutive. With that double-figure feat, he’s just the sixth act with at least 10 No. 1 albums, joining The Beatles (with a record 19), Jay-Z (14), Bruce Springsteen (11), Barbra Streisand (11) and Elvis Presley (10).
