Shawn Mendes has been a fan of Billie Eilish‘s for quite some time now, and he used his BBC Radio 1 Live Lounge performance to show his fellow pop star some love. On Tuesday, Mendes put his stamp on “Happier Than Ever,” the title track from Eilish’s most recent album, in the Live Lounge and used both an acoustic and electric guitar in his performance.
Mendes opted for the quieter parts of his vocal range, starting off by singing the first half softly into the microphone while strumming his acoustic guitar. Halfway through the song, Mendes traded his acoustic guitar for an electric and began to use his full vocal ability, peppering the lyrics with passionate vocal runs and high notes before rising to a stunning crescendo by the song’s end.
Eilish’s “Happier Than Ever” peaked at No. 11 on the Billboard Hot 100 and remained on the chart for a total of six weeks. Her second album of the same name also enjoyed six weeks on the Billboard 200 chart after debuting at No. 1.
Mendes also performed his and Tainy’s recent single “Summer of Love” during the Live Lounge set. The song debuted on the Hot 100 at No. 48 but managed to chart even higher on the Billboard Global 200 and Billboard Global Excl. U.S., opening at No. 35 on both charts. Mendes and Tainy performed the wistful track together at the MTV Video Music Awards on Sunday, though Mendes went solo for the Live Lounge.
